80 Hour Work Week

In response to the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirement to have an 80 hour work week, we have implemented several changes in our program. After two years in place, we are pleased with the changes made.

The "Mole" Rotation - this rotation is done in two week blocks by PL3 pediatric and PL4 M/P residents. Residents during their time as the mole are the nighttime senior resident on the inpatient or ward service on Sundays (all day) and Monday - Thursday 6 pm until 7 am. This individual is considered an active member of the inpatient service and he/she provides leadership to the interns and students as well as continuity for the patients. We have found this added continuity to facilitate care during evening and nighttime hours, increase parents' comfort, and enhance teaching to our learners.

Call frequency in the intensive care units - in both our NICU and PICU rotations - is every 4th night. Residents are guaranteed to have a "golden weekend" during their unit months.

If you have questions about our approach to the 80 hour work week, please ask during your visit.
