I participate in a number of clinical and basic research projects as an investigator, a co-investigator, or a consultant. One of my major current interests is in the synthesis, characterization and biological activities of melanins. In particular, this work is focused on synthetic melanins that have antiviral activities and on the development of such compounds as topical microbicides for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.
I also have an interest in protein analysis by electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. My current work in this area involves the application of protein profiling to the early detection of disease. Current projects include the use of serum proteomics techniques in the diagnosis of prostate cancer, and for the prediction of the amyloidogenic potentials of monoclonal proteins in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias.
As a clinical biochemist, a laboratory director, and a teacher of residents, I also have an avid, ongoing commitment to research in the general areas of clinical pathology, medical informatics, and the development of new analytical methods for use in the Clinical Laboratory.
