Biography

As Director of Veterinary Laboratory Services, Dr. Cera's interest is to provide specific expertise in varied animal species, both internally for research faculty and for local veterinary professionals. Primarily, her current work is with emerging infectious diseases with special interest in zoonoses, those diseases which infect animals and man. As one of the principals in a new consortium between Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine and the Brookfield Zoo, called the Conservation Medicine Center of Chicago, she and her staff work closely with the local zoos and aquarium. The Center draws together a wide range of investigators with expertise in veterinary, medical, and natural sciences to examine the interrelationships between humans, animals, and the environment and the dynamics of diseases as indicators of environmental and public health. The goal of the Center is to learn about these complex relationships in an effort to identify and potentially contain the spread of interspecific disease.
