Biography
Dr. Alkan has earned three board certifications from the American Board of Pathology: anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and hematopathology. His special interests include multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin's Disease, and mantle cell lymphoma. Dr. Alkan's laboratory is currently investigating signaling pathways in hematopoietic neoplasms.
During the past years, signaling for cellular survival and execution of apoptosis has been extensively analyzed in various normal, degenerative, and neoplastic processes. Many new compounds are developed to modify intracellular tyrosine kinases. As witnessed in patients with chronic myelogeneous leukemia or gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), inhibition of tyrosine kinase in tumor cells by small compounds may provide an efficient ways of treatment. Therefore, potential targeting of signal transduction pathway by selective inhibition of protein kinases has been getting more serious considerations in treatment of various neoplasms. He is currently investigating biologic effects of tyrosine kinase inhibitors on hematopoietic neoplasms such as multiple myeloma, acute leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma. His aim is to characterize biologic effects of various tyrosine kinase inhibitors and help development of early clinical phase trials by working closely with oncologists.
