Pediatric Otolaryngology
Andrew J. Hotaling, MD, Section Chief
Kamil Muzaffar, MD
Dean J. Trigg, MD

Critically-ill children and neonates, with their tiny, underdeveloped bodies, may pose unique challenges for primary care physicians or even a community-based general otolaryngologist. Such children may be treated most effectively by specialists who combine in-depth experience in pediatric otolaryngology along with the special skills needed to work with the hearing-impaired child.

Caring for patients up to and including age 18, Dr. Hotaling and his colleague, Dr. Muzaffar, see a cross-section of all facets of pediatric otolaryngology including otitis media and hearing loss, sinus problems, laryngotracheal reconstruction, ENT neonatal intensive care, and care of children with special needs such as those with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or bleeding disorders. Children with difficult airway disorders, head and neck tumors, plastic/reconstruction problems or nasal obstructions also are a part of the Center's case mix.

Often such children are best served by a team approach requiring the special intervention of a pediatric anesthesiologist, pediatric or neonatal intensive care specialist in addition to a pediatric otolaryngologist.

Dr. D.J. Trigg specializes in the diagnosis and treatment (medical and surgical) of diseases of the head and neck in the pediatric population. These include pediatric ear infections and disease, tonsil infections (tonsillitis), sleep apnea and snoring, masses in the neck and head, pediatric sinus disease and nasal obstruction (including problems related to cystic fibrosis), airway and voice abnormalities (stridor, hoarseness, and subglottic stenosis), coughing (croup), and more.

His philosophy about patient care is that no two children are the same and that each requires special attention. In many circumstances, surgical options are considered only after medical therapies have failed. However when surgery is recommended, Dr. Trigg utilizes the latest techniques in conjunction with a staff of fellow pediatric physicians and nurses to provide the safest most comfortable environment for your child.
