Welcome to the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Loyola (Also known as ENT or the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department)

Otolaryngology - Head and Neck physicians are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ears, nose, sinuses, throat, head and neck. This includes tumors of the head, neck, ear, nose and sinus.

Our Department is internationally recognized for it expertise in nasal and sinus disease, skull base and head and neck tumors, ear, as well as mastoid surgery and ear related brain tumors in adults and children.Drs. Stankiewicz, Leonetti, Marzo, Ruggiero, Welch and Zender provide this expertise. In addition, our Department provides evaluations and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring surgery. Our cutting-edge faculty provide service and treatment for pediatric ear, nose, and throat problems (Drs. Hotaling and McDonald), laryngeal, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders (Dr. Akst). General otolaryngology problems are handled by Drs. Matz and Muzaffar, both former Chairman. Working with Dr. Raffin and his staff in Audiology, hearing and balance problems are tested and evaluated. Dr. Konior assists with plastic and reconstructive services for our patients. Drs. Bier-Laning and Kim work exclusively with patients at the Hines VA Hospital. Dr. Marzo directs our Hearing Center. In total, we provide a complete program of care in all areas of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

The Department performs both clinical and basic research in cooperation with many other departments at Loyola. Our members have written several key papers based on research performed in Head and Neck Oncology, facial nerve and balance disorders, sinusitis, and sleep disorders.

Our educational expertise mirrors our research and clinical expertise. Our Department provides many local and national teaching conferences. For example, in 2005 more than 50 papers were presented by Loyola faculty at national and international meetings. Our educational goals aimed at training medical students and residents have been met. We have not had a resident fail the Board examination for Otolaryngology since 1980. Our program is part of the Loyola University Health System and such service is available to provide care to all Loyola patients and their families.

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery was recognized in the 2005 US News and World Report as the best program in the state of Illinois.
