Elective Course No:  OPHTHO 490
Elective Title:  Ophthalmology Research
Course Site:  Foster G. McGaw
Course Supervisor:  Charles S. Bouchard, MD
Additional Instructors:  Doctors Perlman; Bu; Iqbal; John;  Stubbs.

Full Time/Part Time:  Full Time.
Duration:  One to Three Months.
Periods Offered:  As Available.
No. of Students: One to Two.

Prerequisite:  Physical Diagnosis

Special Note:  Students must obtain prior approval from the Department of Ophthalmology to register for this course.  Contact Darlene DeMent at 708-216-4161.

Description of Content Covered:
This elective in ophthalmology research will provide the student with exposure to basic investigative techniques including:

  1. The development of an appropriate hypothesis;
  2. Designing a specific protocol to test the hypothesis;
  3. Ordering/obtaining specific materials and animals to test the hypothesis;
  4. Performing the research;
  5. Writing a final paper for publication.

The student will work primarily with one of the residents in addition to one of the attendings.  The latter will serve as the preceptor for the specific project.

Steps 1-3 must be completed a) before the start of the elective if taken for one months' credit; or b) within the first month if taken for two or three months' credit.  This will require multiple meetings with the specific preceptor prior to the beginning of the elective.  Step 5 may take place following the end of the elective time.  All projects will require a written summary of the specific work completed during this rotation.

Some research projects may be "in progress" and a student may elect to participate in an on-going project.  Specific goals for the elective will then be submitted and discussed with the research preceptor prior to the start of the elective.

Method of Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on direct observation of the student's performance by the instructor, discussions with the student, and a final written report from the student on the work performed during the research period.
