Foreign Missions - Eye Care Around the World The Ophthalmology Department of Loyola University Medical Center continued its great tradition of supporting foreign medical care to the underserved worldwide. Drs. Joseph Doe, Johann Ohly and Emily Velotta were instrumental in upholding the strong tradition of service abroad as they traveled to Guatemala to work with Dr. Linda Novak in rural and metropolitan locations throughout Guatemala. This current academic year, faculty and residents have traveled to India, Guatemala, and Nicaragua bringing quality care to those in need.
Senior resident, Dr. Emily Velotta, spent time with Medical Missions International traveling to Nicaragua during March, 2008. Emily reports a successful mission and continued dedication to offering care in remote regions of the world.
Dr. Sumit Sitole, senior resident, spent a portion of his vacation time assisting in an established practice in India accomplishing the dual goal of visiting with family and performing much needed surgery.
After returning from a mission trip to Kolkata, India with a medical team from Calvary Church in Naperville, Dr. Eileen Gable accompanied Dr. Charles Bouchard (Department Chair), Dr. Tracy Williams (Loyola Low Vision Specialist, and the Deicke Center, Wheaton Illinois), Robert Williams (International Rotarian) and George Bouchard to Guatemala this May, 2008, to assist in the establishment of a foreign mission rotation. The trip focused on planning for a journada scheduled for August, 2008 in Chichicastenango. The journada is the first step to establishing a permanent clinical presence in Good Samaritan Hospital. The team returned energized and anxious to formalize a structured foreign missions program for residents, medical students and faculty.
