Learning the skills to manage information is of paramount importance to the modern physician. The computer is an important tool that facilitates this process. Those who learn the skills of using computers to manage information will have a greater advantage over those who do not. The American Association of Medical Colleges elegantly outlines the rationale and suggests approaches for implementing the Informatics skills in the medical school curriculum.

Medical Informatics, as defined by Dr. Edward Schortliffe is, "… the rapidly developing scientific field that deals with resources, devices and formalized methods for optimizing the storage, retrieval and management of biomedical information for problem solving and decision making".

One of the missions of the Office of Computers in Medical Education is to facilitate learning the skills of information management through the use of computers. This proposal serves as a planning document for implementing and evaluating the medical informatics skills of the students.
