Fr. Larry Reuter, S.J.Staff Biography

Fr. Larry Reuter, S.J.
Assoc. VP – Mission & Ministry
Loyola University Health System

Throughout my years as a Jesuit priest I have had the privilege of being “in the right place at the right time.” For my first assignment I spent 20 years at Loyola Academy, Wilmette IL. There I taught English and communications, coordinated the theater program (which included actor Bill Murray’s stage debut), and served as an administrator. The privilege of those years was to share the dreams and adventures of young people as they began to discover their place in the world.

My second career took me to Loyola University Chicago. For 12 years I coordinated the campus ministry outreach on all of Loyola’s campuses, including the medical center. I also had responsibility for working with faculty and administrators as we learned together how best to articulate the University’s Catholic heritage and Jesuit mission for students, faculty, and staff. The reality that Loyola University is in fact a “home for all faiths” came alive during the 1990’s. The Ministry Center became a home for inter-religious conversation with students from Hillel and the Muslim student association, as well as Protestant & Orthodox, Hindu and Buddhist students. During this time I also served on weekends at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview IL.

Since 2002 I have enjoyed the hectic pace and all-encompassing ministry that marks life at Loyola University Health System. I work with two wonderful women – Sr. Brenda Eagan who is Director of Stritch Ministry and Marie Coglianese who is Director of Pastoral Care. Often on weekends I work a shift as a pastoral care chaplain, and most summers find me as chaplain for one of the Stritch medical service immersion (ISI) trips. In addition to student outreach and care for patients & families, I spend a lot of time working with Health System managers and staff. Together we discover together how best to “also treat the human spirit” for everyone connected with LUHS. I now help on weekends at Ascension Parish and live at the Jesuit residence, both in Oak Park.
