Fellowships
Endocrinology & Metabolism
The fellowship program of the Division of Endocrinology is a training program leading to board eligibility in Endocrinology (two years). Our goal is to educate our trainees and provide them with knowledge and experience that will enable them to become competent and superb endocrinologists.
Clinical Training :
Fellowship training occurs over a two-year period. Designed to develop Endocrinology specialists equally capable of pursuing a career in academia or private practice, fellows obtain their training at Loyola University Medical Center and Hines VA Hospital. LUMC and HVA share a common campus in Maywood, Illinois, adjacent to the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University of Chicago. Training in these venues allows the fellow to be exposed to the best of both public and private medicine. Fellows spend four months on consult service, four months on research and four months on Hines VA rotation during each year. They are assigned one continuity clinic for two years and rotate on a six-month basis in general outpatient clinics. They also attend one to two months of Pediatric Endocrine and two months in Reproductive Endocrine. There are also rotations through Nuclear Medicine, Pathology (Cytology) and clinical labs.
Trainees in Endocrinology & Metabolism actively teach and supervise medical students and residents in Internal Medicine who rotate through the Endocrine elective. In addition, fellows actively transmit information about patients on consultation service to their primary physicians in the hospital, namely the Internal Medicine residents.
Facilities:
Fellows rotate through the inpatient, outpatient and consultative inpatient services of Loyola University Hospital andEdward Hines, Jr. VA Hospitaland several Loyola Outpatient Health Care Centers. The distribution of ages and sex in our clinics approximates their distribution among the general population with endocrine diseases. Trainees care for patients with a wide range of clinical problems and endocrine pathology. In addition to this, the fellows rotate through disease-specific clinics such as the Reproductive Endocrine, and Pediatric Endocrine clinics. They also have training in Nuclear Medicine, Cytopathology, and Clinical Laboratory procedures, and exposure to Endocrine Surgery.
Research Experience:
During their fellowship our trainees are encouraged to participate in research projects with faculty. Our current and past fellows have presented their research at national conferences in a wide range of endocrine diseases, co-written book chapters and review articles.

Applicants must have three years of accredited postgraduate education in internal medicine and must be eligible for or have passed the ABIM examination. Applicants should have a minimum average USMLE score of 195 and posses a valid permanent resident card, J-1 visa or U.S. citizenship. Our program does not accept applicants on H1B visas.
