You are here: Home > Graduate School > Integrated Program in Biomedical Science (IPBS) Integrated Program in Biomedical Science (IPBS) The Integrated Program in the Biomedical Sciences (IPBS) permits highly qualified applicants to select their choice of a specific Ph.D. training program after completion of the required Core Curriculum and laboratory rotations. An important feature of the program is that students enter with no formal commitment to any advanced program or research laboratory, and they may choose from any funded mentor among the entire Graduate Faculty at LUMC for first-year laboratory rotations and ultimately for their dissertation mentor. It functions as a general recruitment mechanism for the seven biomedical science Ph.D. training programs at Loyola University Medical Center (Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy; Biochemistry; Pharmacology; Physiology; Neurosciences; Molecular Biology; Microbiology and Immunology) and affords significant flexibility for making a choice of research-based education. After completion of the first year's experience in the Core Curriculum and the 3 required laboratory rotations done with any funded member of the Graduate Faculty, students specialize in their interest area by choosing one from the seven existing Ph.D. programs. Once the student decides on a course of study, the requirements of the specific program must be satisfied. For the first year the students admitted to this track will be guided by the Program Director (PD) of the IPBS. In consultation with the PD students will select lab rotations and courses during the second semester, and attend program overview sessions and seminars. The student will make a program selection no later than the end of the third laboratory rotation and will enter an advisor's laboratory as his/her advisee. The mission of this program is to broaden opportunities to explore the highly integrated nature of graduate education and research laboratory experiences prior to making a career decision. Admission to the IPBS is determined by a separate Admissions Committee made up of faculty representatives from the existing biomedical science programs. The admissions committee begins review of applications starting December 15 each year to consider applications for the following fall semester. Completed applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee and outstanding applicants will be selected for interviews. Admission decisions will be on a rolling basis until all positions are filled, so applicants are encouraged to apply early. Based on qualifications up to three students will be accepted into this program in each year. Graduate stipends (currently $23,000/yr), full tuition remissions and health insurance are granted to students in the IPBS by the Graduate School and advisor until completion of all degree requirements.
