Department of Medicine

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition specializes in digestive diseases, nutrition and diseases of the liver. It provides consultation on a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as:

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopy and colonoscopy
  • Polypectomy
  • Therapy for stricture or achalasia
  • Control of bleeding
  • 24-hour monitoring of esophageal PH and esophageal manometry
  • Anal manometry

Special Services

  • Esophageal function and testing
  • Gastric motor function and testing
  • Small bowel motor function and testing
  • Color motor function and testing
  • Therapy of motor disorders of the GI tract
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholantio-Pancreatography (ERCP)
  • Papillotomy
  • Extraction for common duct stones
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Comprehensive nutrition evaluation, including body composition and indirect calorimetry
  • Therapy of obesity and eating disorders
  • GI cancer screening
  • Therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases

The hepatology component of the division treats all aspects of clinical hepatology, including viral hepatitis, cholestatic liver disease, hepatoma management, liver transplantation and hepatic failure.

Active research is taking place in the areas of artificial liver, viral hepatitis, organ reperfusion, chronic rejection and hepatic cancer.
