From the Family Medicine Interest
Group Faculty Advisor
I am pleased to welcome all members-old and new-to the Family
Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) and to share some history and news. The FMIG was
started in 1990 by two students who identified the need to have a way for students
interested in family medicine to learn more about the specialty and to be supported,
especially since there was no department of family medicine at that time. These students,
Arti Chandra and Denis Mahar, have since completed their residency programs and are
now practicing family physicians. Since those "early days", we have seen lots of
changes at Loyola, including the establishment of the Department of Family Medicine and a
required clerkship. We have also seen student interest in family medicine grow each year
and our alumni, who are located all over the country, are getting to be an impressive
number. The FMIG has historically been geared towards students in the first two years at
Stritch, but more recently we have begun new activities for third and fourth years,
especially to help with residency application preparation and to encourage interactions
between classes. Your FMIG officers have lots of great activities planned for the year,
and I encourage you to participate. Let us know how we can help!
