Family Medicine Clerkship Newsletter

Director’s Corner

Welcome to the Spring 2008 Newsletter!  As always, and most importantly, I want to thank each of you for your continued time, dedication, and spirit, in teaching our Family Medicine Clerkship students.  This year's graduating class saw 12 students enter Family Medicine.  In Illinois, when one looks at the percentage of graduating medical students entering Family Medicine from any individual medical school, Loyola continues to rank among the highest.  On our Post-Match survey, virtually EVERY student cited their Clerkship as a pivotal factor in determining their career choice.  Once again, our Family Medicine Clerkship is ranked the highest among all Clerkships, for overall student experience.  The reason this continues to hold true, for 11 years running, is YOU

With another academic year coming to a close, and a new one beginning in July, there are always changes as the Clerkship evolves.  A very important change this year, and one you need to be aware of, is a new grading form.  There are 9 areas that you will be asked to assess, instead of the former 18.  Each area has very specific descriptors to aid you in checking the proper box for a particular student.  You will also be asked to comment on the student's professionalism, and construct the usual narrative/summative evaluation.  You are not asked to comment on a specific grade assignment.  I think this is a much more useful tool, in fairly assessing student competencies for his/her level of training.  Similar forms are being instituted for all Clerkships at Loyola this year.

Ms. Cathryn Merrick Moore, our esteemed Education Coordinator, may be contacting you over the next several months, to offer a site visit.  The purpose of such a visit is to build relationships, and lines of communication.  It is not for oversight, evaluation, or to waste any of your valuable time.  I do think such visits are helpful, and assist all of us in assuring the best possible experience, and outcomes.
