Chicago Infant Mortality Study (CIMS)
PI: Fern R. Hauck, M.D.
Funding: NICHD, NIH, CDC
Duration:
3/1/93-10/31/99
The Chicago Infant Mortality Study was conducted to investigate all postneonatal deaths
in Chicago, and all SIDS deaths from birth to 1 year (Nov. 1993-Apr. 1996). Its purpose
was to determine the cause of infants' death with the greatest degree of accuracy possible
and the sequence of factors potentially contributing to death, so that intervention
programs can be developed to decrease the preventable risk factors for these deaths.
Standardized scene investigation, autopsy and laboratory tests were conducted to assist
the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office in accurately determining the cause of death in
study infants and to explore the possible relationship between sleep position, bedding and
other factors immediately preceding death.
