Leischner Institute Scholars ProgramIncreasing clinical and fiscal demands on academic medical centers frequently limit junior and mid-level faculty's ability to develop their educational and research portfolio. In the past, physicians advanced clinically and academically using the apprenticeship model. Junior faculty would find a senior faculty mentor with whom to spend time and model their behaviors regarding patient care, education and research. This model is time consuming and limited by what are often perceived as competing responsibilities - patient care, medical education and research. Yet, when queried, many academic faculties cite lack of mentorship and scholarly development as dissatisfies and barriers to professional advancement. The goal of the Leischner Institute Scholars Program is to develop a core of academicians committed to medical education and educational research. We believe that providing junior and/or mid-level faculty with a unique, on-site, structured program designed to teach scholarly development is the first step in dispelling the myth that "patient care, medical education, and research are competing responsibilities." Select faculty will be nominated by their chairperson to participate in the program. The program will take place one evening per month for three hours over 16 months. In addition to attending the educational sessions covering topics relevant to adult education and educational research, each scholar will be assigned a mentor and will develop an educational project. Projects can range from development of a new curriculum to educational research. Upon completion of the program, scholars will present their projects at the annual Leischner Institute Education Conference. They will also be encouraged to present their projects at the American Association of Medical Colleges or their specialty society's annual meeting. One month before the Leischner Institute Education Conference, each scholar will be required to submit a completed manuscript. All manuscripts will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Leischner Institute. The Institute will provide funding for the author of the "prize paper" to attend the annual meeting of the American Association of Medical Colleges.
