Pre-Clinical Years

  Year 1: Understanding Yourself Year 2: Exploring Options
Fall Semester
  • Meet Faculty Advisor 
  • Shadow Mentor
  • Attend Specialty Group Meetings
  • Log into Careers in Medicine website and create a personal profile
  • Complete Myers-Briggs Personality Testing 
  • Look for community service/academic organizations to get involved in
  • Complete Self-Assessment on CiM website  
  • Attend Specialty Group Meetings
  • Start creating a plan to prepare for USMLE Step 1 (study schedule, where to take the course, registration deadlines, etc.)
  • Research CiM Specialty pages and other residency sources (see CiM website for search guidelines)
  • Attend CiM Speaker Series
  • Record reflection of summer experience on CiM website
Spring Semester
  • Attend Specialty Group Meetings
  • Shadow Mentor
  • Plan Summer Activities- ISI, Research, etc. 
  • Attend CiM Speaker Series
  • Attend Specialty Group Meetings
  • Select third year clinical rotation preferences
  • Attend CiM Speaker Series
  • Continue specialty research- complete more in depth research on those specialties you are interested in (use CiM “second opinions”  Guidelines)
Summer Break
  • Summer Activities
  • Begin “pre-search” of specialties (see CiM website)
  • Research CiM Specialty pages
  • USMLE Step 1

Clinical Years

  Year 3: Choosing a Specialty Year 4: Getting into Residency
Summer
  • Clerkships
  • Obtain ERAS token from Student Affairs Dean’s Office
  • Register for the Match (www.nrmp.org)
Fall
  • Clerkships
  • Create a CV
  • Review your career exploration and personal career assessment
  • Identify faculty to write letters of recommendation
  • Complete ERAS application, including designation of which programs you are applying to
  • Prepare for USMLE Step 2
  • Prepare for residency interviews
Winter
  • Clerkships
  • Set guidelines for decision-making
  • Collect any additional information you would like about specialties you are interested in
  • Begin “Choosing your Specialty” on CiM website
  • Residency interviews
  • USMLE Step 2
  • Early match deadlines (usually early to mid January)
  • Enter Rank Order List online for NRMP match
Spring
  • Clerkships
  • Write your personal statement
  • Research residency programs you may be interested in applying for (see CiM website for guidelines) and physician workforce data
  • MATCH DAY
  • Sign residency contract
  • Graduate- Congratulations!
