The “What’s in a Doctor’s Bag?” program was adapted from a book by the same name authored by Neil Shulman, MD, and Sibley Fleming, MD.   Premedical students at the University of Alabama staged a performance for local children utilizing the original text and published a report of that activity in the Alpha Epsilon Delta newsletter.  Building on their idea, students at Valparaiso University drafted their own script and instituted a permanent program of school visits in 1997.  In 2000,Valparaiso graduates created a second “Dr.’s Bag” program at Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine.  Since its inception at Loyola, the program has grown to include additional activities and the script has undergone several revisions--most notably the creation of “Neddy” the needle.  Dr. Shulman remains in complete support of the program and through his assistance, Loyola became the national headquarters of “What’s in a Dr.’s Bag?” in 2001.
