LEARNING
ASSISTANCE
Learning
Assistance is a specialized academic coaching service
designed to assist bright learners in maximizing their
intellectual potential. These services are offered by
Martha Halsey, M.Ed., a learning specialist with many
years of experience in coaching medical students and
medical professionals.
The
Center is located in the Stritch School of Medicine,
room 255. To make an appointment, call 68166 or stop
by and pick up a schedule of ongoing workshops on advanced
learning strategies.
OFFICE
OF INTERNATIONAL SERVICES
The
International Office, located in room 419 of the Stritch
School of Medicine, assists international students,
scholars, faculty and medical residents on Loyola's
Medical Center Campus. The office offers information
pertaining to immigration rules and regulations, prepares
Immigration and Naturalization Service documents and
petitions, and is responsible for Department of State
IAP-66 (J-1) forms and other requests. The office also
provides services related to program transfers, program
extensions, work authorization, and travel. In addition,
the International Office also provides support with
social and cultural issues, and serves a resource to
maintain and promote cultural diversity on campus. Nonimmigrant
students, scholars, faculty and medical residents are
encouraged to visit the International Office upon their
arrival to the Medical Center Campus. The office may
be reached by calling 708-216-3606, or via e-mail at
rmccar2@luc.edu.
DEPARTMENT
OF STUDENT DIVERSITY
Loyola
University recognizes that cultural diversity is an
invaluable resource. The Department of Student Diversity
works to develop a university community that respects
and appreciates all facets of diversity. Through advising,
support and programming, we work with all of Loyola's
diverse population, reaching out especially to African
American, Asian American, Latino, Gay Lesbian Bisexual
and Transgendered, and Women students. The department,
located on the Lake Shore Campus, may be reached by
calling 773-508-8890 and provides support for the academic
and co-curricular development of students and student
organizations. The coordinators of African American,
Asian American, and Latino student affairs are available
to advocate on behalf of students. They also refer students
to specific university and city services that they may
need. The department is a clearinghouse for information
on financial assistance, educational programs, social
and cultural activities, career opportunities, and other
personal concerns. Appointments at the Medical Center
can be arranged by calling this same number. The department
can also be reached by clicking on this web address

STUDENT
HEALTH SERVICE
Primary
care medical services for students of the Medical Center
are provided within the Student Health Service (SHS)
facility by a physician and a registered nurse. Services
at Student Health are covered by the mandatory $200
per year fee assessed to all full-time students at the
Medical Center. The nurse is available during
most office hours; the Student Health physician sees
patients by appointments during regularly scheduled
clinics, and occasionally by drop-in visits. An on-call
physician is also available by phone outside of the
regular office hours and on weekends for urgent medical
advice.
Free
services include approximately 52 of the most frequently
ordered lab tests. A small co-pay is required on some
vaccines, such as Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Diphtheria/Tetanus,
and Hepatitis B. Allergy injections will be given without
charge to students who are on maintenance injections
and who have provided the Student Health Service with
the specific allergen extract, treatment schedule and
dosage requirements, and detailed instructions for anaphylaxis
response determined by the prescribing allergist or
specialist.
Medical
Students are required, and Graduate Biomedical Students
are strongly encouraged, to carry hospitalization insurance
(such as the plan offered through the University, the
"Student Injury and Sickness Plan") to cover
services not offered by the Student Health Service (SHS)
including hospitalization, specialty consultations,
X-rays, clinical lab testing outside of the SHS covered
lab tests, and other diagnostic testing. This cost and
coverage of this insurance plan is in addition to
the services and fee of the Student Health Service.
The
Student Health Service is located in the Mulcahy Outpatient
Center, in the division of General Internal Medicine,
2nd floor. For any questions or to make an
appointment, please call 708-216-3218 between 8:30 a.m.
– 5:00 p.m. The General Medicine office is available
from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during
which times a nurse is available to assist you. You
may make an appointment with the nurse by calling the
number listed above. Walk-ins will be seen on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Physician
appointments hours are:
- Monday:
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Tuesday:
7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Wednesday:
12 Noon to 4:00 p.m.
- Friday:

Appointments
with the physician may also be made by calling the 708-216-3218
number between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
STUDENT
PERSONAL COUNSELING SERVICE
The
Student Personal Counseling Service was established
to offer support to medical and graduate students who
are experiencing difficulties coping with stress, anxiety,
personal and family relationships, a sense of self,
career ambivalence, or a sense of isolation, be they
related to school or personal issues. Each medical and
graduate student is entitled to ten visits with a licensed
clinical social worker. The therapist may be reached
by calling 708-216-4780.
Student
Personal Counseling works closely with the Student Health
Service in meeting the needs of the students and a referral
to Student Personal Counseling can be made through Student
Health. While most students who use the service are
self-referred, other offices such as Student Affairs,
Campus Life and University Ministry can also make referrals;
please feel free to seek assistance with the staff member
you feel most comfortable with. The therapist can be
reached on a private line to make an appointment, or
to speak with directly. Please leave your name and phone
number on the voice mail and you will be contacted promptly.
Most phone inquiries are returned in the evening, but
if the student requests an earlier response, all attempts
will be made to reach the caller as soon as possible.
Examples
of concerns students have presented include the following:
- Adjustments
to the demands and challenges of feeling overwhelmed
and isolated, especially in a new surrounding.
- Stress
reduction techniques.
- Prioritizing
and organizing time and demands.
- Maintaining
a healthy sense of self in balancing the demands of
medical/graduate school and personal life.
- Addressing
the need for couples therapy to provide support for
a spouse or significant other.
- Dealing
with the symptoms of depression or anxiety that are
expressed in eating, sleeping, or concentration problems.
Medication/Physician
evaluations can be arranged when indicated.
Issues
of confidentiality
are frequently a primary concern of the student. Please
be advised all levels of privacy, professionalism and
confidentiality are strictly maintained. A student's
personal file will not be shared with anyone
without the student's written consent (except as required
by law).
UNIVERSITY
MINISTRY
"We
believe in God's presence in all our work. Through our
care, concern, respect and cooperation, we demonstrate
this belief to our patients and families, our students
and each other" (from the Mission Statement of
Loyola University Health System - 2000). University
Ministry is one of the divisions within Loyola that
helps achieve this goal. Ministry staff serve as chaplains
and counselors for students, staff and faculty at the
Medical Center Campus.
Ministry
chaplains are involved with students in a variety of
programs and activities including faculty-student dinners
for first-year students, couples parties, Chaplain/Mentor
programs, school retreats, prayer breaks, counseling,
working with students interested in community service
projects, international service immersion trips, and
the annual campus "Hunger Week" program. The
offices of Medical Center Ministry are located in the
Stritch School of Medicine (building 120, rooms 270
and 250). You are welcome in the ministry offices at
any time.

CENTER
FOR HEALTH & FITNESS
The
Loyola University Chicago Center for Health & Fitness
(LUCHF) opened in December, 1997. The Center is a 62,000
square foot, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to
the physical and mental well being of Loyola University
Chicago (LUC), and the Loyola University Health System
(LUHS) students, faculty, and staff. The LUCHF was developed
and built to serve the University and Health System,
and local community.
The
benefits of exercise usually include a more positive
mental attitude, higher morale, a reduction in illnesses,
and improved performance in daily activities. In addition,
people who exercise regularly live longer, enjoy a more
comfortable, "healthy" life, possess a higher
level of self esteem, and are more productive in their
home, school, and work life.
The
LUCHF is a full service health club and recreational
facility. It is located between the Stritch School of
Medicine and the South Parking Deck. On the first floor
is an aquatics area, that includes a 4-lane, 25 yard
lap pool, a warm water exercise pool and a co-ed whirlpool.
At the other end of the facility is a gymnasium that
has a full size basketball court, crossed by two full-size
volleyball courts, that are also overlaid with two 3/4
length intramural basketball courts. A 3,000 square
foot exercise area offers free-weight, plate loaded
and variable resistance selectorized equipment by Icarian
and Hammer Strength. Available for no additional charge,
though reservations are required, are two racquetball
courts with a glass back wall. Wooden lockers are available
on a per use basis, in each locker room. The lockers
have a digital touch lock, so no additional lock, or
key is required. The locker rooms feature individual
showers, free towel service, a sauna, steam room and
a whirlpool. Cosmetic toiletries, a lounge area and
rental lockers are also available. On the main floor,
near the entrance, is a Logo Shop, offering shirts,
shorts, racquetball racquets, workout clothing and the
like. Just beyond the Member Service Desk is the Center
Café' which provides a healthy assortment of sandwiches,
salads, soups, cereals, fruit, bagels, cookies and beverages.
Massage therapy, personal training, individual nutrition
consultation and spa services are available by appointment,
at an additional charge.
The
second floor of the LUCHF is surrounded by a 1/8 mile
running/walking track. Also, this level is home to a
wide variety of cardiovascular activities including
treadmills, upright and recumbent bicycles, cross-trainers,
elliptical trainers, stair climbers, an upper body ergometer
(UBE), and rowing machines. Another variable resistance/selectorized
training area is also located on the second floor. An
enclosed group exercise area is located at the top of
the stairs. During peak months, there are more than
50 land and aquatic group exercise classes per week.
Classes run the gamut from beginner to advanced, low
impact to a high energy group cycling class. Most of
these programs are included at no additional charge.
The
Center for Health & Fitness' hours (subject to change)
are:
Monday
through Friday: 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Saturday
and Sunday: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The
Center may have limited hours during University recognized
holidays. The Center is occasionally used to host major
University functions (such as the Medical Center Christmas
Party) that necessitates its closing. Notices will be
posted, but please call for complete information.
