Miscellaneous Questions & Answers

These pages address some of the other questions students often ask:

Where do I find other housing information?

While Campus Life publishes and maintains a web site of apartment listings (see Apartment Gazette section of this handbook) it is by no means all-inclusive. Students oftentimes find housing by using various local newspapers and real estate and housing agencies. Local newsstands and pharmacies carry many different neighborhood newspapers, such as the Suburban Life or the Oak Leaves. The Oak Park Regional Housing Center offers additional services, and they may be reached at 708-848-7150.

Where do most students live?

Most of our students live within a five mile radius of campus, and live in virtually all the villages within that radius. The communities that have the highest percentage of students are typically: Oak Park, Forest Park, Chicago, and Berwyn.

What local transportation is available?

The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) operates a suburban bus division called PACE. Busses follow the main streets such as Roosevelt Road, First Avenue, Cermak, etc. A bus route also connects Loyola to the Desplaines Rapid Transit station (a commuter train station that heads into the downtown area and continues to O'Hare Airport). All busses and trains are exact fare and run on somewhat accurate schedules. For further information, as well as directions, call 1-312-836-7000. Local bus maps may be obtained in Campus Life.

Who do I call for utilities?

Commonwealth Edison , electric company, 1-800-334-7661
Northern Illinois Gas, 708-544-5707
Ameritech Telephone, 1-800-942-8163

Where can I go to change my driver's license or my license plates?

If you wish to change your driver's license, or auto license plates and be registered in Illinois, you may call any Illinois Secretary of State office. The two offices closest to the Medical Center are the Lexington branch, located just south of the Eisenhower expressway, one block west of Laramie (5301 W. Lexington). Their phone number is 1-312-793-1010. The other office is located Melrose Park, IL, 1903 N. Mannheim Rd (Driver=s license only).

Do I need a vehicle sticker for my car?

Each village has different requirements for vehicle stickers (a tax on your auto). Most, however do require it. Call your local village hall for further information.

Where can I register to vote?

Bring two pieces of identification that contain your name and new address to the village hall of your town, or to 118 N. Clark, Chicago, room 402. One piece should include a photo of yourself.

May I use the mail room here at the Medical Center?

The mail room, located in the lower level of the Administration Building, can be used for outgoing mail. All out-going mail must have proper postage affixed. Postage stamps are not sold through the mail room. Any mail coming into the Medical Center for a student should be clearly identified with the student=s name, mail box number or department and school. The mail room should not be used as the student's main mailing address. A students personal mail should be sent to the place of residence.
