Catholic
Concentration in Healthcare Ethics Programs
The
Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy now offers a
concentration in Catholic health care ethics and Leadership Training &
Development (LTD). These concentrations can be
earned within both the Masters Degree Program, Certificate
Program and LTD. Courses in the concentration provide
students with a foundation in the Catholic moral tradition and Canon law,
examine the tradition's application of these commitments in the clinical
setting, and survey major religious traditions as they inform diverse,
religious perspectives in bioethics.
Requirements for completing the Catholic concentration in the Masters Degree
program and Certificate program are outlined below.
Masters Degree in Bioethics and Health Policy
with a Catholic Concentration
The Masters Degree in
Bioethics and Health Policy with a Catholic Concentration requires a total
of thirty (30) credits, nine (9) credits of which must be fulfilled by the
following:
Certificate in Bioethics and Health Policy
with a Catholic Concentration
The Certificate in
Bioethics and Health Policy with a Catholic Concentration requires a total
of twelve (12) credits.

The program
has two major components. Brief real-time sessions combine with on-line
course work to provide training in the theological, clinical, and
organizational aspects of leadership in Catholic health care. The program
consists of:

Training
sessions at the annual
Foundations of Catholic Health Care Ethics conference that
is conducted each year on the campus of the Loyola Stritch School of
Medicine.

Completion
of a minimum of two graduate level courses, one chosen from each of the
two categories:
Category I: Catholic Moral Teaching (Select one of the following
options)

Moral
Theology for Catholic Bioethics (BEHP414) – John Hardt, PhD – online
graduate level course.

Catholic Bioethics in Practice (BEHP415) – John Hardt, PhD - online
graduate level course.
Category II: Organizational and Clinical Ethics (Choose one of the
following courses that deal with the ethics of finance or delivery of
health care)

Organizational Ethics (BEHP412) – Mark Kuczewski, PhD,
Patricia Cassidy, MBA
This is a summer course that consists of 4 weeks of online learning
and a two-day intensive course on the campus of Loyola University
Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
