Earn a Professional Doctoral Degree in Bioethics (D.Bioethics)

A new professional doctoral degree program is now available. This is the first professional doctorate in bioethics to be available mainly through online learning.  We are now accepting applications for our third cohort.  Application deadline is May 15, 2012 for Fall 2012 admission.

Our professional doctorate in bioethics (D.Bioethics) is a first of its kind and meets the growing need for advanced training in bioethics for those professionals that have increased responsibilities related to bioethics and health policy at their institution. Such individuals may serve as chair of a hospital’s ethics committee, perform clinical ethics consultations, have administrative oriented ethics work or are a steward for issues central to your institution’s mission and values.

This degree offers health care professionals an opportunity to obtain a high quality doctorate through a hybrid delivery system (asynchronous online courses combined with short on-campus intensive courses.)

The doctorate in bioethics (D.Bioethics) will consist of 57 hours of course credit (9 required courses and 10 electives). The D.Bioethics is a doctoral degree that requires 30 hours of course credit beyond the typical 30-credit M.A. degree in Bioethics or Health Care Ethics (27 credit-hours are transferable from the MA program*) and includes a practicum and a two-semester capstone course. Students will be required to do a concentration in Catholic Bioethics, Organizational Ethics, or Clinical Ethics. There will be qualifying examination required of our students, along with an oral defense. The capstone experience in this program will be an extensive written report linked to a specific clinical or practical experience. This report may result in a contribution to the scholarly literature (e.g., articles in the peer reviewed literature).

We will offer three specialized concentrations in the following areas: Catholic Bioethics, Organizational Ethics, or Clinical Bioethics. This would require a student to take the 3 courses (9 credits) designated as integral to Catholic Bioethics (Moral Theology for Bioethics; Catholic Bioethics in Clinical Practice; Catholic Bioethics and Social Justice), or 3 courses (9 credits) in Organizational Ethics and Leadership (Organizational Ethics I; Organizational Ethics II; Practicum in Mission Leadership/Organizational Ethics) or 3 courses (9 credits) in Clinical Bioethics (Ethics Across the Care Continuum; Ethics Consultation Simulation Seminar; Practicum in Clinical Ethics).
