Just Healing: 
The Faces of Health Care

A conference and health fair for the
Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory High School Community

This conference is a dialogue regarding the healthcare professions and strategies to advocate for the health of the community. The medical students of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and the students of Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory High School (CTK) and the CTK community will share insights with each other in a variety of ways.

  • Loyola University medical and nursing students are working with CTK students to develop a HEALTH FAIR for the CTK community. This will directly serve the health of the community and provide practical experience and insight into the health professions for the participating students.

  • Break out sessions will help participants develop a variety of advocacy skills.

Breakout Sessions...

  • Self-image & Identity
    Dr. Lena Hatchett will talk about the link between our "body image" and the effects that has on how we live our lives.  We each perceive our bodies in particular ways, e.g., "fat," or "strong," and this affects much of what we think and do.

  • At the Movies: African Americans in Health-Related Films
    Dr. Kayhan Parsi will show a couple of short clips from popular movies.  He will lead the group in discussion of how African Americans are portrayed by Hollywood movies especially in relation to the health-care professions.

  • Social Networking for Better Health
    Medical students will lead this interactive session will look at how one can utilize social networking sites to gain information regarding healthy living.

  • Medical Service Abroad: The Honduras Experience
    Medical students will give highlights of a medical mission trip to Honduras and talk about the opportunities for service and learning that such trips present.

  • Becoming a Doctor
    Dean James Mendez of the medical school and several medical students will explore what it takes to get into medical school and why one might want to consider this path.

  • Becoming a Nurse
    Sandi Tenfelde, faculty from the Loyola Niehoff School of Nursing will talk about the path to a career in nursing.

  • Being Black, Male, and Intelligent: Dealing with the Stereotypes
    Medical students will describe their journey through high school in Chicago and on to college. They will also address the social difficulty of being smart both at home and with peers. There will also be an opportunity for CTK  students to ask any questions and comment on their challenges.

  • Choosing a College
    Medical students will talk about the process of choosing a college that fits your needs.  Both are alumna of historically black colleges and will dispel some common myths about HBCUs.
