This conference, co-sponsored by The Catholic Health Association of the United States and the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine brought together leading moral theologians and health care ethicists to outline the social, anthropological, and methodological foundations of Catholic health care ethics, to apply conceptual resources to current problems, and to confront moral challenges on the horizon for Catholic health care providers. This year’s program had a special emphasis on serving diverse populations of patients and families through spiritually and culturally appropriate end-of-life care.

The conference had three parts:

  1. Plenary sessions that explore the roots of Catholic bioethics especially as evidenced in the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and;

  2. Plenary sessions that examine issues in end-of-life care, and;

  3. Small group sessions in which participants discuss creative strategies to address contemporary challenges in health care.

This program was intended for executive leaders, mission leaders, pastoral care staff, members of ethics committees, clinicians, sponsors, and others in the Catholic health ministry.

Objectives:
