Mark G. Kuczewski, PhD, directs the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy and is the current president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH). He is the author or editor of three books.

Mark is philosopher by training who has focused on the relationship between theory and practice. He is a recognized authority on contemporary Aristotelian methods of communitarianism and casuistry as outlined and a consistent theme in his work is the inevitability of a reliance on practical wisdom and judgment in building consensus on difficult issues. Mark has consistently brought these methods to bear in case analysis as shown in his ethics casebook and in outlining the creation of societal consensus in his testimony before the President’s Council on Bioethics in 2008.

Mark is a dedicated bioethics educator.  He is well-known for having created two of the major online graduate programs in bioethics.  But, his writing has generally focused on medical education and the new professionalism movement.  He has tried to suggest that the language and concepts of professionalism present an opportunity for re-emphasizing medicine’s social contract to promote the common good in regard to health and health care.

His current interests include attention to the role of culture and spirituality in decision making. This has led him to a particular interest in the bioethical issues related to the current Latino immigration. He has his first article on this issue forthcoming in Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics and he is working on a project with the Catholic Health Association to outline best practices in meeting the moral obligations and financial challenges posed by treating this underserved population.
