Erin Egan is an Assistant Professor of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy and the Department of Internal Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago.  Dr. Egan earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology at the University of Denver.  She then conducted clinical pharmaceutical research in allergy and asthma for one year. Thereafter, Dr. Egan went to medical school at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and graduated in 1997.  While in medical school she completed a Masters of Jurisprudence in Health Law at Loyola University School of Law. Subsequently Dr. Egan returned to law school at Loyola University School of Law and graduated from the J.D. program in 2002.  Dr. Egan completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Loyola in 2004; prior, Dr. Egan completed two years of residency in Family Practice.  She completed a fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, University of Chicago in 2001.  Dr. Egan joined the Neiswanger Institute in June 2001.

 

Dr. Egan is currently practices as a hospitalist. Clinically she is interested in patient safety and assessing and improving quality of care, and she participates in several patient safety activities at Loyola.  She promotes the Institute’s commitment to social justice by providing care to the underserved, including urban settings and rural settings including Reservations in North and South Dakota.  She is the Law and Bioethics Affinity Group co-leader for the American Society for Bioethics and Health Policy, and is on the Ethics Committee of the Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Egan's research interests are in professional ethics, physician duty, and medical legal issues.
