Policy Manual Part II (3rd and 4th Years)
Academic Honesty
Stritch students
are expected to conduct themselves in a professional
manner and maintain high ethical standards in all of
their academic endeavors. Instances in which a student
fails to fulfill expectations of academic honesty will
be regarded as academic deficiencies.
Examples
of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited
to, accepting assistance from or giving assistance to
another student during an examination or in the preparation
of any graded material, plagiarism, falsifying patient
information, theft of information, sabotaging another
student's laboratory experiment, misusing another person's
signature or falsifying academic grades or clinical
evaluations.
All allegations
of student behavior inconsistent with this policy must
be documented in writing by the course director or the
chairperson of the department responsible for the course
and submitted to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs
within a reasonable period of time after the alleged
incident. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs, will
confirm in writing to the student(s) the allegation
and documentation, request a written response, and inform
the students of the hearing and appeal procedures which
will be followed.
The Associate
Dean for Student Affairs, upon receipt of all pertinent
materials from the department and from the student(s),
will notify the Senior Associate Dean of the allegations
and provide all submitted information. The Senior Associate
Dean or his designate will determine if their appears
to be sufficient substance to the allegations to either
dismiss the allegation or proceeding with a hearing.
The Senior Associate Dean or his designate will chair
a three person ad hoc committee to hear the case which
will also include two senior faculty in departments
not involved to also serve as voting members. The Chair
of this ad hoc committee will convene the Committee
within 30 working days of receipt of the written allegations
and student(s) response for the purpose of conducting
an impartial hearing. The student(s) will have the right
to be present at this hearing and may be accompanied
by a peer or faculty member. The chair may invite other
parties to participate in the hearing as deemed necessary.
No legal counsel will be permitted.
The decision
and recommendations of the Ad Hoc committee will be
presented to the Medical Council of the Stritch School
of Medicine for approval. The student(s) will be promptly
notified in writing by the Dean of the outcome of the
hearing and the decision of Medical Council.
The student(s)
will have the right of a personal appeal to the Student
Appeal Board. If a student is dissatisfied with the
action of the Student Appeal Board, he/she may submit
a petition for a single appeal to the University through
the Executive Vice President of the Medical Center as
specified in the appropriate Academic Policy Manual.
Dismissed
allegations will not be recorded in the student's official
academic file. Otherwise, all decisions of the Ad Hoc
committee, Medical Council, the Student Appeal Board
and University will be documented in the student's official
academic file.
