Academic Policy Manual Part II (3rd and 4th Years)
Grades, Class Rank and Incomplete Grades

Grades and Class Rank

The official grades which can be assigned for required courses during the third and fourth academic years are:

H Honors
HP High Pass
P Pass
P++ Pass (course designated as graded P/F only)
P* Remediated Pass
U Unsatisfactory

A temporary failing grade which may by given to a student in cases of marginal failure of the didactic or written portion of the course provided that floor performance was satisfactory. The U grade may also be used in non-clinical courses during the third and fourth years in cases when an unsatisfactory paper or case report is returned to the student to be rewritten and all other aspects of the student's performance in the course are satisfactory. A U grade must be removed within sixty working days from the day that grades are reported to the Registrar. A U grade can only be converted to a P or F grade.

F Failure

All failed courses must be remediated to be promoted and recommended for graduation.

INC Incomplete

This grade can only be given prior to final exams in cases of illness or personal tragedy. An INC grade not cleared will be converted to an F.

WD Withdrawn

This grade can only be given prior to final exams in instances when a student has officially withdrawn or been granted a leave of absence from the Stritch School of Medicine.

Students will receive a grade report at least once after each quarter. A class rank will be computed only after all grades have been collected at the conclusion of the junior year and is usually announced in September of the senior year. A second and final class rank is computed after graduation. Class rank is not posted on the student's official transcript and will be released by the school only with the written permission of the student. These rankings will place a student in the upper, middle, or lower third of the class. Only students who matriculated with the current junior class will be ranked.

All grades earned in properly registered courses will be recorded on the student's official transcript. Written evaluations documenting floor performance and overall progress must accompany a letter grade for the course and will become part of the student's permanent record. After proper notice to the student to come to the Registrar's Office to read and sign his/her evaluation, any evaluations submitted to the Office of Registration and Records by the course director and department not signed by the student will be added to the official academic file.

Incomplete Grades

A department may report a grade of INC to the Office of Registration and Records prior to administration of the final examination for the course only in cases of documented illness or personal tragedy. This grade of INC must be approved by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in advance. Normally within fourteen working days from the day the INC grade is reported officially to the Registrar, a department must report to the Office of Registration and Records that a student has cleared a grade of INC. If a student is unable to complete the course requirements within two weeks or in accordance with the plan approved by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, a grade of F will be reported to the Office of Registration and Records by the department. See the section on single course failures for subsequent remediation procedures.

Upon written petition, exceptions may be approved by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in consultation with the student and the department but normally will not extend beyond the end of the academic year in which the INC grade was recorded.
