Academic
Policy Manual Part II (3rd and 4th Years)
Hospital Assignments
- All required
clerkships must be taken at Foster G. McGaw Hospital
or at one of the hospitals affiliated with the Stritch
School of Medicine and specified by the department
as a designated teaching hospital for that clerkship.
Required clerkship hospital assignments are determined
by a lottery. Information regarding the rules for
the hospital assignment lottery are published separately
and provided to all second year students.
- Elective
clerkships and courses may be taken intramurally or
extramurally in compliance with the policies stated
in the Elective Catalogue of the Medical School.
- Students
must comply with all rules and regulations of the
hospital to which they are assigned insofar as they
apply to a clinical student who is officially registered
to participate in an approved clerkship or elective
at that hospital.
In conferring
the M.D. degree, Loyola University Chicago is obligated
by various licensing agencies to certify that students
meet certain program requirements, including the very
important one of time in residence. Such certification
is obviously invalid if a significant amount of the
elective educational experience occurs outside the surveillance
of our faculty. The two chief reasons for these constraints
arise from our institutional accountability to agencies
of government and our concern with appropriate cost
reimbursement.
