Academic Policy Manual Part I
(1st and 2nd Years)
United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE)
Stritch students who satisfactorily
complete all courses attempted during the first two basic science years are
expected to be able to obtain a passing score on USMLE Step 1 and are required
to report a passing total score to the Registrar by January of the senior year
in order to be eligible for graduation.
Students in good standing are required
to take USMLE Step 1 in June at the conclusion of the sophomore year as candidates.
Students who have unremediated grades
of F or unresolved INC grades on their transcript from first and second year
courses will not be permitted to register or sit for the June administration
of USMLE Step 1. Students not in good standing who successfully remediate all
course failures and are promoted to the junior year will be required to take
and record a passing score on USMLE Step 1 in September of their junior year.
In cases where a student requires
more than one attempt to successfully record a passing score on USMLE Step 1,
the National Board of Medical Examiners Policy regarding re-examination will
apply. A passing score must be obtained and reported no later than January of
the senior year in order for the student to be eligible to register for the
last two quarters (last semester). Students who do not meet this graduation
requirement by January of the senior year and have exhausted all remediation
opportunities permitted by the National Board of Medical Examiners will not
be permitted to graduate from the Stritch School of Medicine.
Students should consult the NBME USMLE
brochure regarding registration deadlines, fees, test administration procedures,
score reporting procedures and re-examination policy. National Board publications
are available in the Office of Registration and Records.
Information about USMLE Step 2 will
be contained in the Academic Policy Manual Part II for the third and fourth
years.
